Netherlands: Day 3 and 4
Day 3
To finish off our first weekend here; Annie, dad, and I took a train to the city of Arnhem. The city itself is very small (from what we could tell) but it's home to a fantastic open air museum. The museum is sort of like a park that's been converted into a village, with houses and buildings from many different periods of Dutch history.
The museum was soo much fun! (I used up a roll and a half of film, oops). Some favourite stops were the roaming farm animals, the windmills and a little wooden boat that could be pulled across a tiny lake using a rope and pulley. We went into the old, traditional candy shop when we stopped for lunch. I bought a bag of hard raspberry candies like the ones we get sometimes for special occasions, or visits to grandma and grandpa :-) , at home. Note: they're delicious
We also found of lot of info about the Canadian government trying to get Dutch people to move to Canada after the war, but all of the info was in Dutch so we could read every few words and made up the rest. According to our version of history some people came by sea monster after hearing they could farm marshmallows.
Day 4
Today was our first day at work. We toured the offices (which are craaaazy nice) and learned some more about what projects we'll be doing during our 6 weeks here. All over the main floor of the office are gigantic egg shaped things that we found out are actually meeting rooms. They are lots made of wood that looks almost like giant, wooden baskets, a few made of cardboard stacked into different patterns and one that's all black on the outside with square windows and little round holes all over to let in light. There's also a room full of plants and trees that I will be spending a LOT of time in.
After work we met up with dad and went to Loetje for dinner. We tried some bitterballen, which were delicious, and for supper I had what might be the best chicken skewer I've ever had. 10/10.
Then, on the way home, the incredible happened.
We. Found. Kittens.
Annie first spotted a little black and white one looking for bugs in between the cobblestones. Dad aka The Cat Whisperer found a piece of grass on the ground and got the kitten to come chase after it. After playing with that kitten for a while another black, white and orange one came around the corner to see what was going on. This little one loved the piece of grass and would jump up on it's back legs to swat at it.
I came very close to trying to keep one of them. But alas, my family said no. I hope they come back again.
And that's the day. We all went home and ate way too many raspberry candies.
